The last quarter of 2010 has seen some massive changes in the major platforms #NewTwitter, Facebook and LinkedIn just to name a few. 2011 is set to be another big year in New Media. I recently wrote a column for Social Media Woman magazine about staying ahead of the curve with a 5 Big Shifts In Social Media – 2011 Predictions article. As this video demonstrates, people powered media is mind boggling huge and growing, when platforms change so do the leaders. What’s your tip for staying ahead of the curve in 2011?
Introducing Fizzik – new Social Web browser now in public beta.
If you are tracking Social Media conversations or news on a daily basis to stay abreast of your niche or brand mentions then you are probably going to be interested in the public beta release of Fizzik. It’s an innovative new Web Browser that allows users to quickly preview rich media in search or social search. For example if your niche is interior design and you us social media to stay on top of recent developments and trends in your industry. You might search “interior design” on Twitter to catch the latest buzz. If you are not doing this for your industry or niche you might want to think about it.
As you can see from the example (twitter search for “interior design” on the right there are a lot of links in that feed.
This is the case with most feeds.
So if you wanted to know what was on the end of all those links you would need to click through and find out. Enter Fizzik. Using Fizzik you will have a split screen that returns all the search results on the left and results you select on the right. From Fizzik you can then instantly re-share the content you have discovered with your audience/community/tribe via Twitter, Facebook, or Gmail. How a Business starting with Social Media is like Teen Sex.
For most business people getting started in Social Media is … well tricky. Where to start? What resources should you commit? How do you make an impact right from the start? Will all those Social Media types talk to you tomorrow?
Sound familiar? Marta Kagan is the marketing genius who gave us What the F**K Is Social Media? (a cheeky but mind bending look at the world of Social Media as it relates to Business and Marketing) and the Social Media Serenity Prayer:
“Lord grant me the courage to thoroughly explore the world of social media on behalf of myself and my customers before plundering ahead like a bull in a china shop; the strength to accept [and admit] the fact that I might not know what the f**k I’m doing; and the wisdom to know when to ask for help. Amen.”
2 years on (I know the presentation says 1 but it is 2 years since the last presentation) Marta is diving back in for another look. This time she compares starting Social Media with Teen Sex!
I know she knows how to swear and get your attention. Behind her sassy bravado is a well researched carefully crafted look at Social Media in Business content, you really don’t need to her anymore from me, so here is the F**king Slideshow (I wouldn’t normally swear on this blog, but for some reason it seems ok today).

Byron New Media Social Bookmarking Tags – via Delicious
Social Bookmarking is a powerful way to rapidly share content with your tribe or target audience. When combined with a smart aggregation service like Friendfeed you can share valuable content to a number of touchpoints (Social Media Outposts) with one or two clicks. This is a great way to streamline your Social Media Workflow.
A word of warning to those looking for short cuts. Most tools can be used for good or bad, if you are not mixing your Social Bookmarking with other original content, your output will soon become quite bland. Promoting the good work of others is an important component of Social Media Strategy, however demonstrating no original thought reeks of a robot. So think balance and you’ll be fine.

Develop a Social Media Strategy for your Business or Brand
Like most things in life, is you don’t have a strategy for your Social Media activity then you might find yourself lost and confused when the excitement of “being social” wears off. The video below is the first in a series of 5 that examines the 4 Pillars of a sound Social Media Strategy and provides a pathway to develop a Social Media Strategy for your Business, Brand or Cause.
Four Pillars of a Social Media Strategy
First Social Media Strategy Pillar – Listen
Understand the conversation in your niche or market before creating any significant content. Understand context and hear the pain of your target audience.

The Moment You Believe, In Social Media.
You can’t predict when it will happen, but it will happen.
There will be a moment when you believe in Social Media. Just like the moment that the Berlin Wall came down, Obama got elected and Ashton beat CNN to 1,000,000 tweeps you will remember where you were when it happened.
When was it that you realised that New Media (Social Media) had the power to transform … your life, your business, your cause, or even the world. We are living through the most amazing change in the communication landscape in the history of humanity and you, we, the broader people are through the power of Social Media, in charge.
The Moment I Believed
In 2007 (I know the version below is December 2008), it was late at night, the rest of the family was asleep. I watched “The Message”, a youtube collaboration video, made by an ingenious unknown person known as Mad V. At 2.13 minutes into this clip, a young man I’ll probably never know changed my life. The sincerity with which he shares his message “I Believe In You” touched me so deeply, that I was able to realise Social Media is not just about a meeting of minds, it has the potential to be much much deeper than that.
It has the potential give people the thing that they crave at this time in our history, connection, real heartfelt connection.
If you have a purpose, whether it is to create a product that improves peoples lives, create unity in the world, or to teach people to take care of thier health you will need to deeply move people. In order to do that there is no more effective or efficient way than through the strategic use of Social Media.
Has your moment of belief arrived? I would love to hear your story, please leave a comment.
