Google Is Moving The Cheese: The Winter Of Search Engine Ranking Is Upon Us

This is not a short read, however it’s a little bit shorter than the full article. While I recommend a full read and some related points of view, it’s important to understand the shifts that are taking place in the way people discover your content online.

Full credit to Ed Dale who has been promoting a far more substantive approach for some time, while warning of the reckoning which appears to have arrived.

Small problem, in 2012, the only people who are creating links that Google can read are;

  • SEO Types creating links of dubious quality
  • Digerati – they still remember how to blog and create links – how quaint.
  • umm, that’s it.

Let’s contrast to people who hit the like and retweet buttons.

Everyone and your Momma!
This is a big problem and to Googles credit they know this – the famous “URS Quake” letter sounded the alarm bells.

Google’s results have been getting worse and worse and with the lack of compelling backlink data and a complete freeze out of everything happening in Castle Facebook they have resorted to the Search Engine equivalent of “No one got fired for buying IBM” by heavily favouring brands in the top 10 of their search results. This by the way is such a dumb move – but their hand has been forced.

WINTER IS COMING.

Just yesterday Build My Rank was obliterated off the face of Google. By all accounts – Build My Rank was pretty benign – but at the end of the day you were paying money for links and that brother, is going to get you put up against the wall when the revolution comes.

It’s not like Google has been keeping quiet on this. At SXSW Matt Cutts announced a major shake up in “overly optimised” websites was coming…

Yup.

WINTER IS COMING!

Here’s what’s going to happen.

Google is about to go scorched earth. In a night of the long knives a Lannister would be proud of, they are going to go postal on these link farms that have been making a mess of the google results.

Then we are going to see the major change Google themselves have already foreshadowed. For the first time since Larry and Sergey made the authoritative backlink the cornerstone of Google, the backlink will be demoted. The Google Plus, The tweet, The Like, The Pin will be the new indicator of choice.

You’ll have a rank of sorts, the more likes your content receives, the more followers you have (without engaging in the piss weak follow you follow me shenanigans) will give you an authority on what should appear in the search engine.

Everyone’s search will be different – if one of your friends have recommend something – you’ll see it.

This is ultimately a good thing. Once this winter is over, your great content with your raving fans will see you thrive on the other side.

Just like the last long winter, for many, it will be unpleasant, in some cases tragic.

But it will ultimately be worth it.

HOW CAN YOU SURVIVE THE WINTER.

Create content that delights your audience (actually, makes them feel any emotion is a start) on a CONSISTENT basis
Become one of the top 20 influencers in your niche
Understand that in winter the nights are long and the arbitrage opportunities are scarce. Build a business not a shortcut.
Do you only have one source of traffic…If the answer is yes getting others is job 1!
WINTER IS COMING.

The summer of shortcuts is almost over in online marketing. Those that get this will survive (and Thrive) in the Winter. Those that don’t will end up like Ned Stark in Kings Landing.

Want Work Satisfaction; Progress Trumps Productivity

Progress

Productivity has become an obsession.

With all apps, books and systems we collectively “buy”, we should be a planet of overachievers. Alas most of us don’t feel that way.

In Tony Shiesh’s book (some might say manifesto) Delivering Happiness, he reminds us that from the field of positive psychology there are four keys to happiness;

  • Perceived control
  • Perceived progress
  • A feeling of connection
  • A feeling of contribution>

If you I feel happy, whole and productive try keeping score.

Focusing too heavily on productivity can lead to feelings of inadequacy and failure.

Focusing on how you moved ahead often feels a lot better.

In Starup Mode: Praise

” As you walk through the land of doubt continue to praise”.-North American Indian quote.

So you building something new. Something important, what the world needs now.

If you’re not there yet you soon will be. As Steve Pressfield says in War of Art and Do The Work, resistance will appear. Things will seem uncertain, your fears will appear manifest, budgets will double, projections will halve. It’s okay.

Welcome to the Land of Doubt.

Continue to praise.

Want New Insights Into Your Business; Change Your Perspective

So your examining your project/business/problem and not getting the answers you need?

Change your perspective.

Whenever you shift data into a new format, your perspective changes and new insights will be revealed.

  • Take a problem from your head and but it on paper,
  • convert that project into a process chart,
  • change the table to chart,
  • analyze client requirements in a matrix
  • draw a visual representation of your report
  • make a slide deck for your marketing plan.

I’m sure if I dug I might find some neuroscience to back this up. However experience tells me;

Change the format, change your perspective and you’ll harvest new insights.

Tumblr Easy To Use For News Media

It’s no secret we have been more and more enamoured with Tumblr, it’s not just the numbers (which are compelling it’s the ease of us. We’re not the only ones who think so, check out this quote from Rick Sanchez

That’s where Tumblr comes in.

It’s what Goldilocks would call, “just right.” It’s not a full-blown blog and it’s not a one-sentence message service. It is, as Steve Rubel noted last week, a “hybrid,” a platform that is “…a social >network for both original and curated content… longer than a tweet and often more visual in nature.”

And that’s what makes it the newest and potentially one of the best tools that journalists now have.

In a month where Facebook may have lost as many as 6 million users in the US, and Tumblr — with now over 20 million blogs — >[surpassed wordpress.com in size], Tumblr is about to hit the >critical mass necessary to make it useful as a platform to broadcast and receive news.

If you’re not yet using Tumblr, check it out. Maybe start with searching terms that realate to your niche, market or industry, have a look at what people are talking about. If you are we’d be honoured if you’d follow us on Tumblr

Last Thursday, Tumblr hit 400 million pageviews for the day, Karp tells us. It’s close to 5,000 pageviews a second, he notes.

Karp credits international growth and faster response times to Tumblr’s amazing trajectory. Maloney is more specific. “Tumblr’s growth the last few months has been remarkable, overshadowing everything in the past. It’s coming from all over the globe and across all demos, in particular teenagers,” he says.

Both men are also quick to credit the Tumblr engineering team which has been handling the load after downtime problems earlier in the year.

With the new data, Tumblr is now one of the top 25 sites in the U.S. according to the data Quancast tracks.

With all of us trying to cope in the era of infinite information a very simple, very slick, highly social blogging platform is among the cream that rises to the top of the Internet.

If you’re using the internet to market you business or advance your career you might want to think about leveraging Tumlbr in your media mix.

When Facebook Fans Go Bad: Dealing With Negative Behavior

The benefits of marketing on Facebook have become almost impossible to ignore. However what should we do when fans go bad? Here is an excerpt from a handy article on dealing with negative and inappropriate behavior on Facebook.

If someone is posting comments that you find to be offensive or lewd, you can block them. You can also let that person know that you did not appreciate their distasteful comment by using the report links and choosing “I don’t like this post.” Or you could opt to send a message directly to your friend and request that they remove the posting.

Bullying, Intimidation And Harassment

If things are more annoying than simply inappropriate comments, never fear. There are three things you can do to drop kick that menace: unfriend, block and report

Take that pest off your Facebook site by unfriending the person. Next, go to your privacy settings and block that annoyance from peeking at any information about you, including posts and updates.

Finally, report that abuser to the Facebook powers-that-be by going to the help section at the bottom right of your page. There you will find info on how to report everything that offends you from an event, to a posting, to a message.

If the Facebook team finds that the info does in fact violate the site’s terms, the content will be removed and subjected to, in some cases, legal or some other action.

Pornography And Perverts

If someone sent you a lewd picture that just unnerved you ,know that you can put an end to that creep’s shenanigans by reporting him. Any photo that is found to violate Facebook’s Statement of Rights and Responsibilities governing the relationship with Facebook users can be subjected to deletion. And if there’s anything illegal about the activity, it will get reported to the proper authorities.

Terrorist Activity

If you’ve been receiving material that promotes or raises funds for a known terrorist organization, put an end to the negative proselytizing by reporting the source. Facebook with law enforcement in order to ensure that its users are enjoying the social site in a safe and unmenacing atmosphere.

Don’t Hesitate To Take Action

Don’t think twice about ending any abusive behavior that is directed to you on Facebook. Whether you choose to use the personal controls that the site offers you — such as blocking, hiding or even unfriending — or you chose to go the full route by reporting the offensive actions, Facebook believes that safety is a shared responsibility.

All reports are strictly confidential. The people you report won’t know that they’ve been reported by a user like yourself. After you submit a report, Facebook will investigate the complaint and determine whether the content should be removed based on the site’s terms.  Facebook has provided you, the user with all of the tools you need in order to make the best decision to keep your Facebook experience a safe and happy one.

Tumblr; So Much More Than A Blogging Platform

Unknown
Unknown
Consider this: over breakfast last week Mark Coatney from Tumblr shared with me that most of the platform’s billions of page views take place inside the dashboard rather than on the individual domains. That means that Tumblr is less like WordPress and more like Twitter or Facebook – a social network for content rather than a blogging platform.

Steve Rubel has such a meta view of the New Media media space. He has recently shifted a good deal of his publishing /curation output to Tumblr. As consumption becomes more dashboard based platforms like Tumblr are in the box seat. The numbers don’t lie.
